New images showing snow-covered streets on the set of The Batman reveal at least part of the movie will be set during winter in Gotham. Matt Reeves’s dark take on the Caped Crusader is currently in the middle of an unusually long shoot, first interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic filming shutdown. Later, it was interrupted after the actor portraying The Dark Knight, Robert Pattinson, contracted COVID-19 and was forced to quarantine for two weeks. However, set reports suggest filming is back on track and will finish in early 2021.

Reeves, best known for directing Cloverfield and the final two installments in the Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy, has promised his take on the superhero will be a real detective story, exploring a side of Batman, which has rarely been seen on the big screen. The first trailer for The Batman, released at DC FanDome, blew audiences away, presenting a dark, gritty take on the character as he attempts to track down and defeat Paul Dano’s Riddler. Set photos so far have focused on stunts and the funeral scene teased in the trailer, but new images from the set tease a wintery vision of Gotham.

Images, shared by The Daily Mail and Twitter user S.Kabir, show parts of the set covered in snow, revealing the movie will be set in winter, at least for part of its running time. It’s the first indication yet that the film will take place over winter, lending an even darker tone to the already muddy vision Reeves has for Gotham. You can see one of the images below and the rest at the link above:

Many have speculated The Batman will include elements seen in the classic 1990s Batman comics run called The Long Halloween, which features Bruce Wayne/Batman teaming up with Gotham PD to take down Carmine Falcone. Actor John Turturro is playing that role, lending support to the speculation. These photos tease the movie might take even more inspiration from that comics run, which features several scenes set during winter. How much of an influence the comics have on the plot is up for debate, given Paul Dano is playing The Riddler, and The Joker doesn’t seem to be featured, but these images are at least evidence the movie will take place in winter.

Besides set leaks, there is little information about the upcoming DCEU movie beyond the trailer released earlier this year. And with The Batman’s release date pushed back from October 2021 to March 2022, there is likely to be little forthcoming until well into 2021, so fans will have to be happy with set photos for the time being. There is no doubt, though, that the movie is set to be a great new chapter in Batman’s cinematic history.
