Apple might be making some screen upgrades to next year’s iPad Pro models through the use of OLED displays. Current iPad models use LCD screens, but as OLED displays are one of the newest options for hi-def displays, that would mean the next generation of iPads models could be better suited to newer, and possibly better, technologies than previous versions.

Apple is no stranger to OLED screens, considering they have been an iPhone feature since the iPhone X family released in 2017. OLED has also found its way in TVs and tablets made by competitors of Apple. Thus, companies already see the appeal in OLED, and it is expected to make its way to more devices as time goes on. While LCD has been the standard for displays since the 2000s, OLED is on track to becoming the new standard, especially as the cost of purchasing these new displays continually decreases.

According to TheElec, Apple is ordering OLED screens for tablets from both Samsung and LG. Companies that are already involved in the iPhone screen business. While it is taking longer for Apple to include OLED screens on iPad, customers might start seeing their arrival as early as next year. According to the report, the first wave of iPad Pro tablets featuring an OLED screen will arrive in the second half of 2021.

Apple is likely looking to make the switch to OLED screens for a couple of reasons. Firstly, OLED simply provides more vivid color and lighting compared to LCD. OLED allows pixels to light up on their own, whereas LCD requires an LED backlight to provide lighting. Secondly, OLED could potentially save battery life on an iPad Pro as the tablets would use less energy, compared to tablets that use LCD screens. The logic behind this is that OLED has the ability to nullify the color black, and thus, less power is used to generate visuals. From the end user perspective, and in addition to the battery savings, apps could be viewed in a true-black dark mode.

The caveat to switching to the OLED screen could be the cost involved, since LCD technology predates OLED and continually gets cheaper as time goes on. While this could in theory means a price increase with an OLED iPad Pro, it would also translates to a better iPad experience overall, thanks to improved visuals and performance. Another year of LCD iPads could potentially translate to another year of iPad consumers holding out until a new screen does arrive, making it all the more sensible for Apple to make an iPad switch to OLED sooner than later.
