WARNING! Spoilers ahead for The Haunting Of Bly Manor.
The Haunting Of Bly Manor covers nearly twenty years of time between the very beginning and the very end (plus a flashback to hundreds of years prior), so how old are the characters? Bly Manor‘s surviving characters are shown during different stages in their life, whether it’s through marriage or death. Here’s how old The Haunting Of Bly Manor’s characters are at the beginning of the Netflix series and at the end.
Mike Flanagan’s latest installment in The Haunting series adapts Henry James’s 1898 novella, The Turn Of The Screw. It is one of the most prolific ghost stories in literary history. Undoubtedly, the director is familiar with literature in the horror genre as he also adapted Shirley Jackson’s 1959 gothic novel in The Haunting Of Hill House and had the opportunity to direct the sequel to Stephen King’s The Shining, Doctor Sleep. In October 2020, The Haunting Of Bly Manor premiered on Netflix with several familiar faces returning from Hill House. Victoria Pedretti portrays Danielle “Dani” Clayton, an au pair hired to care for Miles and Flora Wingrave, who lost their parents to a tragic accident years prior.
As the series progresses, Dani discovers that there are ghosts hidden in the darkest corners of Bly and out in the open. Fellow Hill House alum, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, returns as Peter Quint, a ghost who begins to possess Miles after the lady in the lake killed him and trapped him within the grounds of Bly Manor. Only four of the series’ main characters make it out of the manor alive, and audiences even get to see one of them get married. Here’s how old Jamie, Owen, Miles, and Flora are at both the beginning and end of The Haunting Of Bly Manor.
The very beginning of the series, episode 1, “The Great Good Place”, opens up on a wedding in North Carolina — the year is 2007. An unknown narrator takes a seat, and begins to tell the guests a ghost story that is set in 1987 – twenty years earlier – at Bly Manor, in England. As it is revealed in the end, the bride is a grown-up Flora Wingrave, and the narrator is Jamie, Bly Manor’s gardener. When Dani first comes to care for the children at the manor in 1987, Flora is 8 and Miles is 10. Therefore, in 2007, Flora is 28 years old and Miles is 30 by the time the series ends.
Jamie, who is portrayed by both Amelia Eve and Carla Gugino, is the gardener who fell in love with Dani. The two spent approximately 13 years together, and acquired their civil union documentation in Vermont in the year 2000. While Jamie’s age is never specified, she seems to be around the same age as Dani, who is in her mid-to-late 20s when the series begins. By the end of the series, Carla Gugino takes over the role in order to establish that some time has passed since her partner died. At the end of the series, Jamie is likely in her early-to-mid 40s. Owen (Rahul Kohli), the chef and love interest of Hannah Grose (T’Nia Miller), is approximately 10 years older than Jamie and Dani. Therefore, he would be in his mid-to-late 30s in the beginning, and his mid-to-late 50s by the end of the series.
Not much is known about Henry Wingrave (Henry Thomas), but he is presumably older than Owen; he’s the same approximate age as Miles and Flora’s deceased parents, since he is the children’s uncle. This could mean Henry is in his late 30s or early 40s in the beginning and his late 50s or early 60s by the end of the series. While Flora and Miles’s ages are easy to decipher, the other main character in The Haunting of Bly Manor are a bit more difficult to pin down. Regardless, context clues reveal their approximate ages, such as when Dani and Jamie met, as well as Owen’s backstory that other characters reveal about him throughout.
